James Walker Brown of Kennett Square
James Walker Brown, Jr., 73, of Kennett Square, died Sunday November 20, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Betty Lou Stewart Brown, with whom he shared nine years of marriage. Born in West Chester, he was a son of the late James Walker Brown Sr. and the late Hazel (Bryant) Brown. His father founded Boy Scout Troop 60 in which James advanced to the level of Eagle Scout. Mr. Brown was a 1955 graduate of Kennett Consolidated Junior-Senior High School and graduated from Lincoln University with a bachelor of science. He was a founding member of the Counts Social Club of Kennett Square which provided Guidance and activities for area youth. James retired from Chrysler Corp in Newark Del. He was a member of Bethel AME Church in Kennett. James enjoyed playing the guitar, restoring automobiles, listening to the blues, playing pinochle, fixing computers, and spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include, in addition to his wife, two sons, Dennis Walker Brown of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and Michael Abram Brown and his wife Angela Davis Brown of Newark Delaware; one sister, Ida Elizabeth “Betty” Williams and her husband Rev. Doctor George Williams of Columbia, Maryland; and three grandchildren, Preston Walker Brown, Perrin Thomas Brown, and Kaylee Denee Owens; and a host of loving nieces nephews, and cousins, including Stephen Brown, Tracy Brown Palaganas, and Geoffrey and Angela Williams.He is also survived by his step mother Margaret Brown, two step sisters, Rose and Brenda and a step brother. Visitation with James’s family was held from 9 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, November 23, at the Bethel AME Church, 300 E. Linden St., Kennett Square, PA 19348. His funeral service followed at 11 a.m. Interment was in Union Hill Cemetery. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association 399 Market St. Suite 102 Philadelphia, PA 19106.
